November 6th, 2008 SanDisk ExtremeFFS “100x Faster” SSD Write

SSDs will apparently get a serious (extreme, if you will) upgrade in the coming year, with SanDisk’s announcement of a new technology dubbed ExtremeFFS (Flash File System). It is, as you can possibly guess, a new file system, but it’ll use page-based methods so that the data’s location on the drive won’t be tied to its physical space, as it is now. SanDisk says this means that random write speeds are going to be 100 times faster than they are on drives using current technology. The company hopes that this advance, coupled with other upcoming standards, will lead to widespread adoption of SSDs in PCs (and much, much more money in their pockets). That should fit in nicely with news we just heard that Microsoft’s Windows 7, unlike Vista, will include optimization for use with the drives. While actual drives that carry ExtremeFFS have yet to be announced, SanDisk expects them to ship in 2009. Fun times.

November 6th, 2008 Intel Core i7 Launch Date Set

Intel will launch the Core i7 “Nehalem” microprocessor on Nov. 17, according to an emailed invitation sent Wednesday to reporters.
Intel’s invitation claims that the chip will be “the fastest processor on the planet”. Intel has based its claim on the SPECint_rate_base2006 benchmark, which will apparently be highlighted at the event, to be held in San Francisco.
The quad-core Core i7 architecture is Intel’s first microprocessor design since the original Core architecture succeeded the Pentium family in 2006.
The Nehalem/Core i7 architecture has already been extensively benchmarked. Intel has also released the prices it will charge for the Core i7, which are aggressive enough so that the low-end Core i7-920 will dip into the sub-$300 range. The complementary X58 chipset, which will be used in motherboards tied to the Core i7, has also been reviewed.

It’s been tentative for a while, but the Nikkei is reporting that Panasonic and Sanyo have come to an agreement, and Pansonic’s buying up Sanyo. The actual act should be completed by April next year, and will result in one mega-corporation with revenues over ¥11.2 trillion (around $110 billion)—sounds like enough money to build quite a few mega-robots, or at least several mega-TVs. As part of what will be Japan’s biggest electronics company, Sanyo won’t be disappearing as a brand though, and Panasonic apparently intends to retain most of Sanyo’s employees. [Bloomberg]

October 29th, 2008 NetFlix streamed to Xbox 360

It’s something you can’t get on the Roku. Nor on LG’s BD300. Nor on Samsung’s P2500 / P2550 Blu-ray players. Nor through Netflix’s own “Watch Instantly” portal. It’s high-def Netflix streaming, and it’s coming first to Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Just in case you glossed over this massively huge tidbit when digesting the new dashboard information this morning, we’re here to remind you that when the aforesaid dash hits on November 19th, with it will come HD Netflix streaming for (US-based, presumably) Xbox Live Gold members. You should know that this is only a “soft launch” with about 300 titles available for now, and the litany of details you’re surely craving simply aren’t available at present time. At any rate, we’d say things just got a lot more interesting in the world of digital downloads, but there’s really no need. The real question is: when will everyone else follow suit, and how quickly can we expect current Netflix streamers to get the HD upgrade?
