WASHINGTON (CNN) — Three major electronics manufacturers have agreed to plead guilty to a price-fixing conspiracy and pay $585 million in criminal fines for their roles in the pricing of LCD display panels, the Justice Department said Wednesday.
The department announced the charges following a settlement with Sharp Corp. of Japan; LG Display Co. (LPL) of South Korea and Chunghwa Picture Tubes of Taiwan.
The charges were filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Calif., and announced by the assistant attorney general for antitrust at the Justice Department in Washington.

The 5.01 PSP software is now available for download, pleasing mostly those with 8GB or 16GB Memory Stick Pro Duo cards that don’t work with the new PlayStation Store update found in version 5.0. As reported, there is no fix for the funky interlacing lines (feature!) found on the new PSP 3000’s LCD.

This handsome PC, which just missed the price cutoff for the value PCs category, demonstrates what a little extra cash can bring.
Priced at $1620 (as of October 10, 2008), Gateway’s FX4710 straddles the line between being a high-end value system (for which our cut off point is $1500) and being alow-priced member of the power desktop category–the classification that it currently lands in.

PSP 3000
Sony’s new re-brushed and buffed-up PlayStation Portable 3000 handheld video game system should finally be dangling from plastic retail hooks or resting in neat little rectangle stacks on shelves as you read this, but should existing PSP owners think about upgrading? The PSP 3000 is basically a point update to the PSP “Slim and Lite,” Sony’s lighter, faster, slimmer refresh that arrived in September 2007. Recall that the original PSP debuted in March 2005, so we certainly weren’t due for an update this soon, but an update we’re getting, and one that includes a brighter, faster LCD display, expanded video-out, and a built-in microphone.

LaCie rolled out a new line of LCD monitors Tuesday aimed at creative professionals who put a premium on color accuracy. The 700 series of displays comes in 20-, 24-, and 30-inch models.

The 700 series features an RGB-LED backlight which, according to LaCie, allows the monitors to produce purer red, green, and blue primaries for a larger range of vibrant colors than are available in other LCD offerings. The monitors offer ultra-wide gamuts of up to 123 percent of Adobe RGB, which LaCie says will minimize the need gamut mapping and allow users to move easily from image capture to print.

Look out, tweens — Philips has a new line of LCD TVs aimed squarely at your wall / bedroom pedestal. Introduced over in Italy, the Flavors family will initially consist of a 22-, 32- and 42-inch set, the latter of which packs a 1080p panel, 30,000:1 contrast ratio, 5-millisecond response time, 500 cd/m2 brightness and a pair of HDMI ports. The concept here is pretty easy to grasp — each set comes bundled with two interchangeable frames which are reportedly held up by good ole magnetism, and if two just aren’t enough, more can certainly be ordered. Currently, Philips simply has a placeholder page up for the new crew, so we’ll just let you simmer on the prices for now: they’ll be €549 ($803), €799 ($1,168) and €1,199 ($1,754) in order of mention.

Pentax’s upcoming entry-level DSLR, that we brought you news of on the weekend, is now official. It’s actually named the K2000 inside the US and K-m outside. The sensor is indeed 10.2-megapixels and it does have a 2.7-inch LCD and lacks live-view, just as we’d heard. With an auto scene-detection mode, it’s also aimed squarely at amateur DSLR users, though it has the “Shake Reduction” tech found on higher-end K-series. Pentax is also releasing new lenses for the K system: the DA L 18-55mm lens and DA L 50-200mm ED zoom (both designed to be affordable versions of existing lenses), and the high-end DA Star 60-250mm zoom and DA Star 55mm—this last with a f1.4 aperture. With a bundled DA L 18-55mm lens and AF200FG add-on flash the K2000 will cost $700 in the US in November.

TV Tech
Ever wonder exactly what all the different kinds of TVs these days are all about. I found a simple explanation of LCD and Plasma type technology.
Flat TV - LCD
Two sheets of polarized transparent material, one with a special polymer coating that holds liquid crystals, are adhered together. Electric current is passed through individual crystals, which interpret the information from the broadcast signal to allow or disallow light through them to create an image.
